What is not ban evasion: having an alt. Discord allows multiple accounts, and most alts are harmless. An alt becomes a problem the moment it is used to dodge a ban, a timeout or a block.

How a Discord server ban actually works#

When you ban a member, Discord blocks two things: the account (its user ID) and the IP address it was using. Any other account joining from that IP is refused too. That second part is why people call Discord bans "IP bans".

It is also why they leak. An IP address belongs to a connection, not to a person:

None of this takes skill. Discord's own moderator documentation says it plainly: IP bans exist, and VPNs get around them.

So the ban is not broken. It targets an account and a connection, while the thing you wanted to remove is a person.

Why ban evaders escalate#

Someone who sneaks back in has already shown they do not accept your decision. The usual pattern:

1. Test quietly. Lurk, read the room, check whether anyone noticed.
2. Resume. The same behavior that earned the ban, often more carefully.
3. Retaliate. Go after the moderator or the member they blame.

Most cases stay mild. A few do not: Discord's moderator documentation describes evaders who move on to raids, mass spam and threats against staff. Even the mild ones cost you moderator hours and member trust, because your community watches what happens when a ban does not hold.

How to detect ban evasion: 8 signals#

No single tell exists. You stack signals:

1. Account age. Created days ago, or old but strangely empty.
2. Join timing. Arrives minutes to days after a ban.
3. Join method. Comes in through the same invite the banned user had.
4. Profile echoes. Familiar name pattern, avatar style or bio.
5. Knows too much. Finds the right channels, in-jokes and staff names on day one.
6. Writing fingerprint. Same punctuation, emoji, typos and slang.
7. Same hours. Active in the same time window.
8. Same targets. Goes straight back to the same people or the same argument.

One signal is a coincidence. Three is a pattern worth checking.

What to do when you suspect ban evasion: a 5-step playbook#

1. Do not tip them off

Do not ask "are you the person we banned?" in public. They will deny it, go quiet and come back smarter. Keep the discussion in your moderator channel until you are ready to act.

2. Write down what you can see

• The user ID. Usernames change; IDs never do.
• The account creation date and the time they joined.
• The invite they used (Server Settings, Members, "Join Method").
• Screenshots of the messages that made you suspicious.

This takes two minutes. You will need it for the ban reason, for your team and for any appeal.

3. Confirm the link

Behavior tells you where to look. It does not prove two accounts belong to the same person. That is what an alt checker is for.

5. Report it to Discord

Right-click or long-press one of the account's messages, choose Report, and pick the harassment category. You can only remove someone from your server. Discord can act on the account itself.

How to prevent ban evasion and make bans stick#

Detection is reactive. These five habits make coming back slower, harder and more expensive.

Raise your verification level. In Server Settings, under Safety Setup. Medium requires an account older than 5 minutes, High requires 10 minutes of membership before posting, and Highest requires a verified phone number. Phone verification is the only native setting that costs an evader something.

Put a verification gate at the door. Discord's levels check the account, not the person. Double Counter verifies new members when they join, catches accounts that belong to someone your server already knows, including people you banned, and blocks the VPN connections that hide them.

Watch the network, not just the account. An evader who was caught once usually tries again.

Keep a ban log with user IDs. A private channel or a sheet: user ID, date, reason, link to the evidence. It turns steps 2 and 3 of the playbook into a thirty-second job.

Offer a real appeal path. People with a legitimate way back have less reason to sneak back. A short form, reviewed by a moderator who was not involved in the ban, is enough.

How to avoid banning the wrong person#

Catching evaders is only half of the job. The other half is not punishing someone for who they live with.

• Shared connections are normal. Siblings, roommates, dorms and schools share an IP address. Discord's own IP ban can lock out an innocent person, and a Medium or Possible match can point at a housemate.
• A new account is not evidence. Most new accounts belong to new users.
• Never act on one signal. Combine behavior with a confirmed link before you ban.
• Keep what you find private. Use a report to make a moderation call inside your team. Never post it, and never use it to expose anyone. Sharing personal information about a user breaks Discord's rules, and it is not what these tools are for.

When the evidence is thin, a quiet watch costs nothing. A wrong ban costs you a member and some of your community's trust.
